This week my company celebrated its 7th birthday. In 2012, I left a senior role to set up on my own, after 16 years of agency life working on accounts as varied as Linda McCartney Frozen Foods, Everton Football Club, Sanyo, Colgate-Palmolive, Durapipe, Electricity Northwest and Martin Miller’s Gin.

Those years in agencies set me up with B2B, consumer and trade PR experience and introduced me to some amazing clients, journalists and colleagues in London, Manchester, Newcastle and further afield, but nothing prepared me for the emotions I would feel going it alone.

It took a full two years to get used to being my own boss; driving new business while managing my own accounts; no team to manage or bounce ideas with and realising I didn’t have to be at my desk from 9-6 every day. I re-learnt the importance of networking, made friends with tech and had to get a hold of my time management to keep on top of the admin – but with some fantastic clients soon coming on board (and still working with me today!) my portfolio quickly grew. I’ve worked on my own and alongside some amazing other freelancers and agencies and have loved it all.

This birthday message is a huge thankyou to all the wonderful clients I’ve worked with over the last seven years. There have been insurance and internet companies, furniture and food manufacturers, retailers and recruiters, bedding brands and bikes. Architects and advisors, schools and swimming lessons, vets and villa companies, tile and tape distributors! Some have been long-term projects, some one-off pieces of activity, and several of them retained.

It’s been quite the mix – and that is exactly what I love about PR and running my own business.

Here’s to the next seven years…….
